New Year detox

New Year Detox, Anyone?

Toxic substances are all around us, in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and in the products that we use. As such, they are hard to avoid. But maintaining a healthy, whole-food fresh diet will help. Your kidneys and liver, on the job every day, can filter out many toxins. So, should you detox, and will it help? How about a New Year detox?

What are Toxins?

Specifically, toxins are harmful substances that living cells or organisms produce. Plants, animals, and other organisms like viruses, fungi, bacteria, or protozoa create small, poisonous molecules, peptides, or proteins. This excludes synthetic toxicants created by artificial processes. When your body tissues absorb toxins that interact with the body’s enzymes, they can cause diseases. While some toxins only cause minor discomfort and pain, some can be deadly.

How can I reduce my “toxic load”?

We live in a world filled with environmentally toxic chemicals: heavy metals, pesticides, fertilizers, and PCBs. Scientists link these to health disorders, especially of the vulnerable nervous system. Most of these chemicals dissolve easily in fats and lipids. As a result, they affect brain tissue particularly, as it is made up mostly of lipids. Diseases linked to toxic exposure include Parkinson’s, ALS, learning disabilities, and certain dementias. Many other neurological symptoms of toxic exposure include headaches, fatigue, impaired concentration and memory, and insomnia. [—Jeffrey Rossman, Ph.D., Rodale, as seen on NBC.com]

Although our kidneys and our liver do a good job filtering out toxins, they can get overwhelmed by them, especially when we are fighting illness. A good detoxification program like Vedas Core Restore BT improves your digestive system function and increases nutrient absorption. Core Restore combines a nutrient program, lifestyle, and a comprehensive 7-day diet to reduce your toxic burden.

Additional Tips From Blythedale Children’s Hospital:

  1. Feed the beneficial microbes in your gut lots of fiber-rich plant foods. As a result, by getting the recommended 25 to 40 grams of daily fiber, you help protect the gut lining, enhance the growth of good bacteria, and increase the production of small-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs fuel the cells of the intestines and help signal the immune system.
  2. Aim to consume at least 30 different plant foods weekly. Include a variety of beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and brightly colored fruits and vegetables. Phytochemicals, such as polyphenols, found in brightly colorful plant foods inhibit the growth of bad bacteria and reduce inflammation and gut permeability.
  3. When you regularly eat fermented foods like kefir, sauerkraut, miso, or kimchi, you boost SCFAs, reduce bad bacteria, and increase the availability of the nutrients of many foods.
  4. Eat fish and foods high in omega-3s. Higher intake of omega-3 fatty acids is correlated with intestinal wall integrity, reduced inflammation, and greater microbe diversity.
  5. Cut way back on processed foods. Processed foods’ added sugars, artificial sweeteners, chemicals, GMOs, and additives are associated with lower microbe diversity and inflammation.
