Laugh lines, perioral lines, marionette lines, crow’s feet, and tear troughs. We have a complete vocabulary to describe wrinkles and folds that develop in aging faces. The other side of the wrinkle and fold story is the different types of dermal filler Vedas can employ to minimize those wrinkles and folds from under your skin to smooth it out and restore its fullness. If you see your age in the mirror as sagging skin or thinner cheeks or laugh lines (when there is nothing funny!), you can consider a liquid facelift a reasonable remedy.
Injectable Dermal Fillers are a Liquid Facelift
Traditional facelift surgery might pull your skin to a new position, anchoring it with stitches that hold it in place while it heals. Dermal fillers are a minimally-invasive treatment that allow the skin to remain in its natural position while injecting a substance below the skin to “fill” the dips and divots from below. Fillers encourage natural healing and growth of new collagen to prolong the new smooth skin surface. Because fillers are not strictly surgical…no knives need be applied…their effectiveness and longevity depend largely on the composition of the filler.
Temporary Fillers Can Last a Long Time
On a scale of short-lived to long-lived, temporary dermal fillers are largely made with hyaluronic acid (HA). A natural material sometimes called a “goo” molecule, HA is a carbohydrate polymer that occurs between cells and in the lubricating synovial fluid in joints. It is also a major component of skin, which it helps to repair, for instance, after a sunburn.
Injured skin exposes tissues to infection, making it vital that healing be rapid. Hyaluronic acid acts as an important moderator of an inflammatory response, as HA can protect against free-radical damage to cells. It is found in relatively high concentrations in the most internal layer of the skin and in the margin of a wound, and helps to reduce scarring.
Dermal fillers containing principally hyaluronic acid are eventually absorbed by the body, and need to be re-applied periodically to maintain desired correction. These temporary fillers are FDA approved for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and skin folds.
Several absorbable dermal fillers are FDA-approved for use in lip and cheek augmentation and correction of contour deficiencies.
“I Like the Way I Look”
All fillers are temporary, although several contain materials that are absorbed much more slowly or not absorbed at all, prolonging their effect. These are FDA-approved ONLY for correction of nasolabial folds and cheek acne scars in patients over the age of 21.
